Eight Kiwis in line for New Zealand Grand Prix trophy

The jewel in New Zealand’s motorsport cabinet is up for grabs at Hampton Downs Sunday 5 February and of the 20 drivers vying for the coveted accolade there are eight Kiwis eager to etch their name into history.

Last uplifted by Shane van Gisbergen in 2021, the list of winners is largely international – of the 66 events held a Kiwi has won 32 of them.

Driving the Hamilton Motorsport #4 car, this will be Billy Frazer’s second attempt. The

ex-pat says the Grand Prix is the one he has his sights on.

“For me not being able to do the full CTFROC this is my number one. It is a race that you want to win,” said the 19-year-old.

“To me I just look at the cars on track now, the Formula Vee’s, they were the first ones I saw race and my starting point. Then Formula Ford, then to race overseas but when I look at the one race that draws me back and that’s the NZGP – It is really special and I’m so super excited.”

For Breanna Morris, starting her first Grand Prix and being one of the few in with a chance of winning is another marker moment in her career.

“Of course, it’s a great thing to be part of and we all want to bring it home – it’s that one line you want to have on your résumé. I think it’s great that as Kiwi’s we have that ambition to be at the front and to win,” said the 19-year-old.

With three practice sessions on the Friday the weekend qualifying is held in three parts on the Saturday morning. That’s followed by a 20-lap race in the afternoon and a 20-lap race Sunday morning. The Grand Prix event starts at 4pm.
