Mark Mallard joins Southern Sprint race line-up

MotorSport New Zealand board member and long-time club racer Mark Mallard leapt at the opportunity to race at this weekend’s Southern Sprint racing event at Teretonga Park.

Mallard was offered a drive in the Scott O’Donnell owned Mini Cooper – a sister car to the one being raced by Emma Gilmour.

“It was a one-minute phone call from Scott on Wednesday when he asked if I wanted to drive,” explained Mallard. “After an instant yes, as any car offered by Scott is going to be a good one, he then said he had to get the incoming call – and that’s the last I spoke with him.

At Teretonga in support of his son and rookie Toyota 86 racer Thomas Mallard, he added it was an opportunity to tick a bucket list item:

“Any time I get offered an opportunity to race I’ll grab it – that I’ve never raced a lap here is even more reason why it had to happen.”

The three-race event is part of the second round of the Super Sprint MotorSport New Zealand Championship series. Practice, qualifying and the first race of 10 laps will be held on the Saturday. The 12 and 14 lap races will be held on the Sunday – with all action televised live.
